Unfolded Chronicle of USR

This is a story behind the founding of Upsilon Sigma Rho Confraternity and the pioneer batch - THE ALPHAS. Principally, this is a story of the ambition of a man for an organization which might help the conditions of the other people.

Upsilon Sigma Rho started few years ago when Jomil Mitre was still a student from the University of Santo Tomas (UST). It was an organization to which he belonged to when he was a student at UST. When he entered medicine, it was one big shock not just to him but to his classmates as well. Medicine is different from the training in pre-med. One could easily think of withdrawing from this field because of culture shock, uncertainties, or just plain confusion. It was then that Jomil decided to have a talk with his seatmates and suggest to them a plan of organizing themselves and pulling their resources so that one way or the other they can hurdle the trials and tests. They agreed to the idea and so they adopted the by-laws of the Upsilon Sigma Rho. The concept spread like wildfire, inspite of the fact that they were all neophytes and there were already existing organizations in the college. The first group were 10 very determined young men who offered whatever they had for this budding organization. The first batch was called Alphas, and it seems that they were a dynamic group for before the first week was over, a couple of ladies and gentlemen from the other section offered to join the organization. They too exhibited the strength and determination needed by the pioneers so they decided to let them in. They were called the Betas. Since the time they grouped themselves on the 29th of June 1983, the rest is history.

The small aggregation then has grown into a formidable congregation composed of young idealistic doctors whofs objective is to help not just the members but others as well. Year after year, more and more were added to the USR family, now totaling to more than 400 members. The fraternity and sorority became better each year. The USR hymn was conceived through the effort of sorority member Janice Alaras. Medical missions were conducted every year as far north as Apayao and to provinces in the south. Annual sports fests, balls and parties, were conducted every year. Since 1989, USR is a proud organizer of the prestigious Miss Medicine which is comparable if not better than other beauty contests in the land. USR has been and is still producing student leaders who play important roles in the student government not only in the college but also in the university. It has yielded quality students, dean's listers, board top notchers, doctors excelling in their chosen field of specialties, and members who became more successful in fields other than medicine. In every organization there are and always be problems to face. USR has gone through a lot. But young as she is, after ten years of existence, USR is now and still is the organization to beat. We expect more mountains to hurdle but by the help of the Almighty, we hope to survive. From the words of our founder Jomil Mitre "...it has been our desire that in the future when we are released from the portals of MCU, we can still boast of a cohesiveness and a feeling of belongingness that will transcend time."
